Histamine Intolerance
Histamine intolerance is not a true allergy. It's a capacity problem. Your body makes histamine. Your gut bacteria make histamine. The foods you eat have histamine in them. When you make or eat more histamine than your body can break down, symptoms show up all over.

Some people's bodies have a hard time breaking down histamine. Histamine is a chemical messenger that builds up from food and gut bacteria. When the system that clears histamine falls behind, the chemical piles up like backed-up traffic. This can trigger symptoms that feel like allergies: itching, flushing, headaches, or digestive trouble. The gut wall itself can become more open, letting particles through that normally would not pass. Mast cells are immune guards in the tissues. They may be more reactive in some people, releasing histamine more easily. The root cause varies. Some people inherit a slower clearance system. Others have a gut where histamine-producing bacteria thrive. Many have both. A practitioner can test whether histamine is elevated and whether the gut barrier is compromised. Is histamine intolerance the same as allergies?
No. Allergies happen when your immune system reacts to something specific. Histamine intolerance is different. It means your body gets too much histamine from many sources and cannot break it down fast enough. The symptoms can look the same, but what causes them is not the same. The treatments are not the same either.
Do I need to avoid high-histamine foods forever?
Usually not. A low-histamine diet helps your symptoms while we fix what is really wrong. The real problem might be that your body cannot break down histamine, or your gut bacteria are out of balance, or your gut lining has holes in it. As these things get better, most Members can eat those foods again.
Mast cells are special cells in your body. When they work right, they help protect you. But sometimes these cells get stuck in overdrive.
