Castor oil, in glass, with the method included

    The short answer

Choose castor oil that is organic, cold-pressed, hexane-free and bottled in glass. Hexane-extracted oil in plastic undermines the purpose of a practice you apply to your skin repeatedly. Use packs 30 to 60 minutes, two to four times weekly, and avoid during pregnancy or with a bleeding disorder.

Castor oil is one of the few traditional practices we recommend without hedging, because the mechanism is reasonable and the cost is almost nothing. But the product details matter more here than in most categories, since you are applying it to skin over and over.

Hexane-free and cold-pressed, in glass, every time. And a method attached — because a bottle without instructions is why most people buy castor oil once and never open it again.

What to check on any label, including ours

Use this whether or not you buy from us. These are the things that separate a serious product in this category from a marketing exercise.

    Hexane-free and cold-pressed

Solvent extraction leaves residue in a product you apply repeatedly to your skin. Cold-pressed is the only version worth buying.

    Glass, not plastic

Oil is the solvent most likely to pull compounds out of a plastic container. Glass is not a preference here, it is the point.

    Organic and clearly sourced

Castor is an agricultural crop like any other, and you are applying this over your liver.

    Instructions and contraindications

Frequency, duration, placement, and who should not use it. A product that omits the cautions is not being careful with you.

    The clean swap

Drugstore castor oil in a plastic bottle, sold as a laxative

Often hexane-extracted, packaged in plastic that oil readily interacts with, and labelled for oral laxative use — a route we do not recommend without clinical guidance.

    What we do instead

Organic cold-pressed hexane-free oil in glass, with a topical method, a frequency and a full contraindication list attached.
